Metallica’s philanthropic foundation, All Within My Hands (AWMH), is expanding its Metallica Scholars Initiative (MSI) with its largest investment yet, committing more than $3.3 million to workforce education while launching the program internationally for the first time.
Now entering its eighth year, the initiative will welcome 18 new U.S. schools this fall, with 15 institutions receiving $75,000 grants to enhance career and technical education programs and three schools receiving $50,000 grants for specialized equipment purchases. The latest expansion also marks MSI’s debut outside the United States through a $250,000 (£186,000) partnership with London’s Capital City College Group.
The program, launched in 2019, was created to address skilled labor shortages by helping students pursue careers in trades such as welding, plumbing, electrical work, automotive repair, nursing, healthcare, firefighting, EMT services, maritime manufacturing, agriculture, and other high-demand industries.
“This thing started as a dream. Now our program is changing lives,” Metallica frontman James Hetfield said in a statement. “To expand our impact on a global scale and support even more students is so rewarding. We’re so proud of all the Metallica Scholars who have come through it and all the ones who will participate in it.”
The initiative continues to operate in partnership with the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), which says the program has already supported approximately 13,000 community college students nationwide.
“The continued growth of the Metallica Scholars Initiative is a powerful testament to what’s possible when visionary philanthropy and community colleges come together around a shared mission,” said AACC President and CEO Dr. DeRionne P. Pollard. “This latest, generous investment by Metallica’s foundation will reach more learners while strengthening the workforce pipelines that power local economies.”
According to AWMH Executive Director Peter Delgrosso, the latest expansion will significantly increase the program’s reach.
“Metallica Scholars Year 8 will see our largest-scale growth yet,” Delgrosso said. “We anticipate supporting close to 4,000 new students in the United States and more than 1,000 learners in the UK for a total of 5,000 across the program.”
The UK expansion will be delivered through Capital City College Group, one of London’s largest vocational education providers, serving more than 30,000 students across 12 campuses. The move fulfills a long-term goal of taking the program beyond the United States, reflecting both Metallica’s global fan base and the worldwide demand for skilled tradespeople.
The eighth year of the initiative also renews partnerships with Carhartt, Wolverine, CNH Construction, and Upstaging, Inc., while welcoming ServiceTitan as a new corporate partner supporting the program’s continued growth.
