Three people have died during World Cup celebrations in Mexico City on Tuesday, per BBC.
According to the city government, more than one million people took to the streets to mark the country’s first World Cup knockout win since 1986. Amid the crowd chaos, three people died due to suffocation, including a 19-year-old woman, a 48-year-old woman, and a 44-year-old man.
Health authorities said emergency services treated three unconcious people at different locations around Paseo de la Reforma before they were transported to the hospital. All three were confirmed to have died due to suffocation and were identified by their families, authorities added.
Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada took to social media following the news to express her “most sincere condolences” to the victims’ families. She urged fans to “always celebrate with responsibility, care, and empathy.” Ahead of the football match, she told fans watching near the Angel of Independence monument to look elsewhere to celebrate, as huge crowds already gathered in the area.
Mexico is headed into World Cup’s round of 16 on July 5, where they are set to play the winner of Wednesday’s match between England and DR Congo.
